Lyrics Assignment

Song Title: The Scientist

Artist: Coldplay

1. Why did you choose this song? Why is it important to you?
I chose this song because I heard it a while ago and it has been able to match how I’ve felt about many situations in which I’ve felt I was losing my grip. Right now, it pretty much sums up how I feel about a friendship I have with a really close friend who recently moved. It reminds me that things in life can change, and it won’t be easy, but we’ll always pull through what is thrown at us.

2. What is the story in the lyrics?
Chris Martin (member of Coldplay) felt as if their album that was about to be released was missing something. The whole band came up with this song and found that it made their album complete. The song itself is about a person who is shocked by the fact that the power of love cancels out all Science and fact. The song starts out with an apology to Love and tells a story of how the “Scientist” just wants to start over with Love.

3. What is the structure?
This song is mainly in free verse but has longer vowel sounds at the end of most sentences which drag out the end of each idea in the song.

4. What is the emotional tone or mood?

The tone of this song is mainly reflective because the meaning of the song intends for more thoughts to branch off for the listener to contemplate about love and life.

5. What is the message or lesson?
The message this song sends is that as much knowledge as a person may have, they may not know what they are getting into when they are confronted with love.

6. What is the intention of this piece of music?
The intention of this piece of music is to spark contemplative thought about one’s life. It has open-ended meaning and can be applied in many situations. It is an easy song to listen to because it’s slow and the lyrics have something everyone can relate to.

Come up to meet you, tell you I’m sorry,
You don’t know how lovely you are.
I had to find you, tell you I need you,
Tell you I set you apart.

Tell me your secrets and ask me your questions,
Oh, lets go back to the start.
Running in circles, coming in tales,
Heads are a science apart.

Nobody said it was easy,
It's such a shame for us to part.
Nobody said it was easy,
No-one ever said it would be this hard,
Oh take me back to the start.

I was just guessing at numbers and figures,
Pulling your puzzles apart.
Questions of science, science and progress,
Do not speak as loud as my heart.

And tell me you love me, come back and haunt me,
Oh and I rush to the start.
Running in circles, chasing tails,
And coming back as we are.

Nobody said it was easy,
oh its such a shame for us to part.
Nobody said it was easy,
No-one ever said it would be so hard.

Im going back to the start.

oh, ooooo,
ah, ooooo,
oh, ooooo,
oh, ooooo
